10 degrees C today, or 50 F, with showers - a nice recovery from sub-zero temperatures a few days ago. Plenty of blue sky at the moment, with a blustery wind...
The newspaper got its temperature conversions in a muddle a couple of days ago, in one of those "global warming" features - while 10 C is 50 F when you're talking about how warm or cold it is today, a climate change of 10 C is not equal to a change of 50 F, but only 18 F, sigh...
That is HUGE. It would hold all the traffic up while it was doing its job. . I guess they work overnight so that the roads are nice and clear for morning traffic.
Actually, they speed along quite nicely. They do the speed limit or faster. You just don't want to follow too closely when they're flinging salt. The back end is full, and they raise up the front of the "bucket"... on the back of the bucket part is an apparatus that spins and spreads the salt.
Very impressive - though a shame if your car, er, auto, is parked at the side of the road when the plough speeds past, instead of being in a few inches, you'd suddenly have a whole highway's worth of snow deposited on you...
In the winter, we have this thing called "odd/even parking". Something about parking on the odd side on odd numbered days, etc.
In other places, they give you a time limit to get off the street or be plowed in. We actually live on the one stretch of our street that doesn't allow street-parking.
Last year, it took me three hours to shovel out, almost two hours of that was at the end of our driveway, digging out what the plows forced in. I'm 5 feet, 4 inches tall, and it was shoulder height to me.
Yeah, that is the downside of clearing the highway of snow, that does leave a great continuous hump of solid snow along the edge that will be there long after the regular snow cover has melted away.
With those open-air heaters that people use at chilly barbecues, there must be flame-thrower type devices for clearing snow? Or would they lead to too many sheets of ice forming, leading inevitably to slips, falls, crashes, and lawsuits?
Sunny and warm this morning. Everything is soaking wet though, the sun hasnt had a chance to dry out all the water from the huge storm we had last night.
The guys in the know from the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology tell me its due to be about 25C today.
